Before You Go

Know Buruanga

Buruanga is not a commercialized tourist trap. It is a real, laid-back Filipino coastal town. Beautiful, authentic, and refreshingly unfiltered. Here's what you need to know before you arrive.

💸

Cash Is King Here

Buruanga is primarily a cash-based economy. Credit cards, debit cards, and online payment terminals are not available in resorts, restaurants, or stores. Plan accordingly.

⚠️ Withdraw cash in Caticlan or Kalibo before arriving.
📱

GCash is Accepted

GCash is widely used and accepted across Buruanga even in small sari-sari stores and local eateries. If you have a Philippine mobile number, GCash is a convenient backup to physical cash.

✅ GCash works. Cards do not. Download GCash before you travel.
🏧

Limited ATMs (2–3 Only)

Buruanga has only 2–3 ATMs in the entire municipality. One is a Land Bank ATM located near the town proper / tourism area. These can run out of cash during peak season and holidays.

⚠️ Always withdraw MORE than you think you need in Caticlan or Kalibo. Don't rely solely on Buruanga ATMs.
🌊

A Laid-Back Coastal Town

Buruanga is calm, quiet, and not commercialized. There are no malls, no 7-Elevens, no Jollibees. What you will find is pristine nature, genuine community life, fresh seafood, and peace.

✅ Embrace the simplicity. It's part of the experience.
📡

Mobile Signal Can Be Weak

Signal coverage is available in the town proper (Poblacion) but weak or absent at Hinugtan Beach, Hacienda Maria, and other remote spots. Download offline maps (Google Maps / Maps.me) before leaving covered areas.

📲 Download offline maps for Buruanga before you go.
🗣️

Language & People

The dominant language is Buruanganon. Many also speak Aklanon and Hiligaynon. Most understand Filipino (Tagalog). Buruanganons are known to be exceptionally warm, generous, and hospitable;one of the most genuine communities in Aklan.

💬 "Kamusta?" and a warm smile goes a very long way.

Banca (Boat) for Hire

Many beaches and attractions in Buruanga are only reachable by motor banca (small outrigger boat). There is currently no centralized booking system. The best way is to contact the Tourism Office, who can connect you with local boat operators (bankero).

📞 Tourism Office: 09209789602 — they can refer you to trusted bankero.
🧭

No Tour Operators Yet

Buruanga currently has no organized tour operator system. Tours, boat hires, and local guides are arranged informally through resorts or the tourism office. This is part of the charm and part of the planning challenge. Build extra time into your itinerary.

ℹ️ Contact the Tourism Office for guide referrals and local assistance.
☀️

Best Time to Visit

November to April is the dry season and the best time for beaches and outdoor activities. March is the driest month. June–October is habagat season, rough seas, not ideal for banca trips or cliff diving.

🌞 Plan your trip Nov–April for best beach weather.
🐟

Seafood & Local Food

Buruanga is a fishing community — fresh seafood is abundant and very affordable. Local carinderias (small eateries) near the plaza serve excellent home-cooked Filipino meals. Don't expect restaurants with menus expect genuine home food.

🍽️ The freshest fish you've ever eaten. No menu, just what the sea gave today.
ℹ️

Tourism Office is Your Friend

The Buruanga Municipal Tourism Office is a key resource. They can help with trip planning, local guide referrals, boat operators, accommodation inquiries, and visitor information. Don't hesitate to reach out before your trip.

🧴 Pack light. Pack smart. Bring cash.
